impact. but we have had a chance now, 3 1/2 years of a president obama administration. you either love it, hate it or you are indifferent. now he has a record. back in 2007, i think that we put him under the microscope -- as we should any candidate, particularly him because we knew so little about him. he wasn't in the public eye for a long time. now, though, i would expect the people are making decisions, are you better off than you were 3 1/2 years ago? is the world safer? do you think we are going in the right direction? those type of questions. his record has a far greater impact than when he said in 2007, but i could be wrong. >> sure, sure. i agree with you. i don't think this particularly speech is definitive, but it's a reminder obenghazi, for example, you have the same pattern of dishonesty in the obama white house that you had in the speech from 2007. the amazing thing is the degree to which the elite media tries to avoid all of this. they didn't cover it in twint 07. they don't want to cover it in 2012. but have you seen literally in 2 1/2 weeks aircraft pattern of breath-takin

romney can make the case that there will be no change in the next four years because obama didn't deliver the change he promised four years ago, that he said he would lower the unemployment rate to 5.6%, but we've now had our 43rd month of above 8% unemployment. he said that family incomes would go up, but they've gone down $4,000 under his watch. he said that bush was unpatriotic for adding four trillion to the debt over eight years, he's added five trillion over just four years. so he needs -- americans don't want to have more of the same, and obama really tonight has to show how his second term would be different than the first instead of this forward stuff that we've been hearing from him. megyn: you know, joe, i took a look at those fox news polls, and marc's right, the overwhelming majority of americans want change, they don't want to stay the course, but the question is, who does that mean? whose policies do hay want to change? it's something like 95% of republicans want to change course, 51% of democrats and 77% of independents, but when you drill even deeper and ask, well, who's

with barack obama, number one. and that what mitt romney has to do is convince people that four years from now a mitt romney presidency will be better for their personal lives. they understand on the likability question of which the president beats mitt romney so handily, they're not about to convince all these people suddenly to turn around and say, oh, we like mitt romney more than we like president obama. what they're going to try and do is say you like him enough and he can do the job and he's better able to fix things. so he's not going to try and be bill clinton here, i feel your pain. but what he's going to try to do is say i'm focused on your concerns. >> can a debate like tonight's debate really change the direction of this campaign? >> i think it can accelerate or decrease momentum one way or another. and i went back and looked at 2004 for example when you had john kerry and george bush. in sort of late september bush was ahead of kerry by about seven points. after the first debate it was a two-point margin because john kerry did very well. then george w. bush came back and did bette

capitalizes on it with what he did last night. what is different than four years ago when barack obama took the stage in mississippi he came out with grand ideas about all of us coming together and how we are going to cut the deficit in half and the world will like us again, and how we are going to get out of iraq and afghanistan. guess what, now he's going to run on what he's done over the last four years and there is not a lot he can point to to say that they were successful. that's what got him in trouble last night. if mitt romney does this the next couple of debates and he continues to go out there in the way he did last night and saying, this is how you failed, this is where you failed, this is where it's not adding up, i'm not sure barack obama can really come back with actual facts or figures, because he doesn't have those as time to run on. megyn: simon did you share chris matthews' frustration at the president's performance? >> i may have not been as animated as he was last night. the president didn't have a good night. mitt romney had a good night. megyn: what happened to barack
